Conditional Roadmaps: How we approach product strategy in the emerging category of kidtech

https://twitter.com/MrDylanCollins/status/1218125000391168000 SuperAwesome is a category-defining company. That makes it both a fascinating and challenging place to be a product manager. Over the next few articles, I want to share some of my thoughts on how we approach product strategy in a category-defining product company. At SuperAwesome, we build kidtech. Kidtech exists to make the internet safer for kids by ensuring kid-safe digital products deliver privacy and responsibility by design. If you want to know more about the principles that underpin kid-safe online products, check out the Kidtech Standard, and please consider endorsing it.  Kidtech is an emerging category focused on enabling the internet for kids (who are now over 40% of new online users). We are not alone in attempting to solve kidtech problems, but it’s currently a pretty exclusive club. The kidtech space is still early, and because of this, there are so many problems to solve, and so many potential opportunities to pursue.  Read More

Building COPPA-compliant competition flows for kids

When I was seven, I entered a competition at a local toy shop. The new James Bond movie, Licence to Kill, had just hit the theatres (eek, that dates me) and the competition was to promote the movie. The challenge was to build a vehicle out of LEGO to help James Bond escape from a desert island. (Did Licence to Kill even feature a desert island?)  Read More

How we implemented kid-safe analytics with Amplitude

PopJam is a social platform that is built from the ground up to be safe, appropriate and fully anonymous for kids. It’s a safe, moderated community for kids to engage with their favourite content and brands, designed specifically for the safety and data privacy requirements (COPPA, GDPR-K) of the under-13 audience. Because it is aimed at an audience of 7-12 year olds, we take both privacy and compliance extremely seriously. A critical concern for any platform is the product analytics you use to measure and learn. This is never a trivial thing to get right. Deciding what to measure, and how, requires careful thought, but at least you have a massive array of products and solutions to choose from, often with fully-featured SDKs to make implementation quicker and easier.
